Christopher McGerr - Game Designer

Projects at Synergy Space

My being hired at Synergy Space was through the IAESTE scheme, an international body connecting students and young professionals with international employers for internships and short-term contracts. The Tunisian position, the only position directly connected to Game Design, was open to students across the world (at the time of writing IAESTE has commitees in 87 countries), with each country nominating an individual student for the position, before being considered by a national commitee and the employer themself.

The primary purpose for me be being hired was a Game Designer to work on what was to be Tunisia's (and later the Franco-Arab world) answer to SecondLife. The ambitious project unfortunately did not come to fruition due to both scope and a lack of investment, however the company did fortunately have additional contracts that I was able to work on whilst with them.

Tunisia is a country with two official languages, Tunisian-Arabic and French. Whilst Synergy Space was an English-speaking environment for the most part, I was required to excercise my basic knowledge of French whilst in the country - and as a result my French reading skills have improved to a fair standard.

MMO: Sans Titre

May 2012-August 2012
Game Developer
3 Full-Time, 2 Part-Time

The main reason for my employment at Synergy Space was to work on their proposed Unititled Massively Multiplayer Online Game. I was hired as a Game Designer to work on what was to be Tunisia's (and later the Franco-Arab world) answer to SecondLife. The ambitious project unfortunately did not come to fruition due to both scope and a lack of investment.

The project was developed using Unity3D and UnityParkSuite and during my time working on it, the basic back-end systems and control/game mechanics were established and implemented into the project. In terms of gameplay, the game had a very simple design functioning more as a chatroom than as a full playspace similar to the likes of Habbo and Club Penguin but with a slightly higher target audience than the teenage-focussed Habbo - additional gameplay would have been integrated into the game after a small userbase had been built up.

Supermarché

August 2012-October 2012
Game Developer
4 Full-Time

The current financial situation in Tunisia means that money is restricted from leaving the country. As a result of this, online shopping opportunities for Tunisians are rare. Supermarché is designed to be an innovative solution to introduce the same sort of online services in use by (although still relatively not commonly used by customers, at the time) British supermarket chains such as Tesco and ASDA to Tunisians.

The project was created using Unity3D and UnityParkSuite with the final objective being a browser based interface that could be used for ecommerce.
